So we have a brown rice bowl with the chicken. The chicken is marinated with ginger and turmeric, coriander. Then you got your house-made hummus

What’s up, everyone? Welcome to Campus Eats. We’re here at University at Albany, and this is the amazing Sabrina. Hi. She’s like, “We have to check out the Halal Shack.” And from what I hear, it’s awesome. So this is my favorite place on campus. I come here at least once a week, two if I’m treating myself, but the story is amazing.

Basically, the owner is an alum of the university. His name’s Jamal, and he graduated with the class of 2007. Uh, he wasn’t planning on working in the restaurant industry, but he started with this special sauce that blew up, and so now he’s back at the University of Albany, opened the Halal Shack, and now it’s blown up across 60 different campuses nationwide.

And it… and it’s really cool because, like you were telling me before this, [00:01:00] like his story is awesome. I mean, his parents are from Afghanistan. Mm-hmm. He was born in New York City, so there’s a lot of like that influence that is like within this cuisine. Mm-hmm. Just the journey and, um, to building out this, this establishment- Yeah

where it’s going. It’s pretty cool. So what do we have here? So we have a brown rice bowl with the chicken. The chicken is marinated with ginger and turmeric, coriander. Then you got your house-made hummus. Um, basically a lot of it is house made. It’s a fusion kind of dish inspired by his family and his culture, but with an American twist.

Well- So just dig in … it smells absolutely awesome. So let’s have a bite here, huh? All right.

How is it? It’s awesome. Right? Hey, guys. It’s so good. Oh my God, Alex. Oh my God, that’s so right. This is Jamal right here. I’ve been hearing about you. Great to see you guys. Come on down here. Yeah. This is awesome. That’s awesome. Thank you guys so much for coming. I’m really excited to- Let’s go … be here at the University of Albany today.[00:02:00]

Uh, I started here. The coolest thing about being here is I still work out of here, so although we have- You work out of here? I work out of here. Yeah. So although we have 60 plus locations- 60 stores, don’t worry about it, you still work out of that, that store … I still work out of here, and I’m extremely grateful they haven’t kicked me out.

Yeah. It’s embarrassing, and, uh, really happy to be here. What a home. Yeah, great place to be. Hey, thanks for it, thanks for it. Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, thank you for- It was awesome … thank you for coming. All right. Appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. Ch- cheers everyone. When you come to University at Albany, you gotta come to Halal Jack.

All right? Cheers, everyone. Take care.
