Peacock Pride with Jasheana

Segment #1 from Upper Iowa University

Transcript

Dreams of becoming a physician often start with a passion for caring for others, and that’s exactly what drives Jasheana, a sophomore biology major. From growing up in a big, big family, to gaining hands-on lab and leadership experience here at UIU, she’s building the foundation for medical school and beyond. With Peacock Pride fueling her journey, let’s hear from Jasheana.

– Thanks for the intro, Alex. What’s up, everyone? I’m the second oldest of seven siblings and I helped care for them growing up. I also grew up attending and working at my family’s daycare center before coming to college. All this time spent caring for children made me want to become an OB/GYN physician, and I chose to continue that journey here at Upper Iowa University. To accomplish this lifelong dream, I look for colleges that provided a personalized one-on-one learning experience. Here at Upper Iowa University, I get precisely that. The class sizes allow professors that cater to each student’s specific needs. In the lab, professors answer questions as they come up with hands-on learning. Due to this, I understand more about the different fields of science that I study. Throughout the close-knit campus, I’ve had numerous opportunities to build my resume and make connections. With the Career Development Office, I built my hours of job shadowing, which is imperative to getting to medical school, and I have built leadership skills as a resident assistant. I was chosen to be a part of the ExcEL program here at Upper Iowa, building my laboratory research experience also crucial for medical school. And guess what? That program also gives me free tuition. The campus has numerous opportunities to encourage students to get involved. I’m the secretary of the Student Government Administration, a track team member, and the President of Peacocks for Progress, a club that aims to get students involved in community service. I cannot execute all of my duties in these organizations without the amazing community that surrounds me. I will never forget the impact that these amazing people have had on me. They’ve taught me that Peacock Pride isn’t just cheering on friends or wearing a sweatshirt. Peacock Pride is knowing in your heart there is no place on earth you’d rather be than right here at Upper Iowa. Well, I gotta run. Back to you, Alex.

– Wow, Jasheana, your story shows how Upper Iowa University empowers future leaders through personalized academics, research opportunities, and campus involvement. From the lab to student government to community service, you embody Peacock Pride in every way. And we cannot wait to see where your path to becoming an OB/GYN physician takes you. Keep soaring Jasheana, and thanks again.
