Army ROTC with A’Deja
Segment #2 from Florida A&M University

Hey, y’all. Growing up in Delaware, I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse, but I didn’t know what exactly it was that I wanted to do in my life. All I knew was that I wanted to go to college at FAMU, but how was a mystery to me. I decided to join the military, which turned out to be the most life-changing decision I’ve ever made.
I enlisted for three years and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, where I attended college part-time. Then, I applied for a scholarship called Green To Gold, which allowed me to attend FAMU free of charge and rejoin the military as a second lieutenant upon completing my degree. Being a military student pursuing my nursing dreams feels surreal.
It’s the best of both worlds. In ROTC, I received awards, became first sergeant, color guard commander, and jumped out of an airplane five times. Now, as cadet commander, I lead the battalion to develop both future soldiers and myself. I’m also able to showcase what right looks like when you’re aligned with your purpose.
When I graduate next year, I’ll return to the military as a nurse and as a officer, which means more will be expected of me. This isn’t new to me, because FAMU’s nursing program is rigorous, and I’m constantly challenged to meet new levels of professional growth. This all works in my favor to become the best nurse and officer I can be in the United States Army.
I am blessed that my military journey provides me with a debt-free pathway to FAMU. The Army pays for my books, my tuition, and my nursing uniforms, and they even provide me with a monthly housing allowance so I don’t have to worry about any financial obligations and I can focus solely on school. What a blessing.
That’s my life. Bye, y’all.
