Staying Near To Go Far with Stacey

Segment #10 from Western New Mexico University

Transcript

Let’s hear from Stacey, a freshman studying cell and molecular biology. Like many students here at WNMU, she enjoys taking learning outside of the classroom. And she has a campus support system like none other that keeps her close to home so she can go far. Take it away, Stacey.

– Thank you for the introduction, Alex. Hey, everyone. My story’s a little unique and different. As I’m attending Western New Mexico University as an undergraduate student, my mom is also attending pursuing her graduate degree. This proves that WNMU is the perfect place to create opportunities for anyone at any stage in your life. I’m currently studying cell and molecular biology, so you could say I spend a good amount of time in the lab. But WNMU is located just minutes from the Gila National Forest, one of the most biodiverse natural laboratories I could possibly ask for. And the professors here are well known for taking our learning from the classroom and out into the 3.3 million acre natural ecosystem near campus building a connection between learning and doing. Life at WNMU is more than just doing homework and being in classes. Student events on campus offer opportunities to meet new people, try new things, and of course, root for our mustangs at athletic events where I’ve been known to sing the National Anthem, one of my favorite things that I do here at WNNU. Attending a small school that is so family and community oriented has been a very positive experience for me. I’m on campus every day and always run into someone I know, my friends, people I went to high school with, and even my younger sister who also attends WNMU as a high school dual enrollment student. Family truly is everywhere here. Going into college, I was very nervous. But I’ve created lifelong experiences and connections here at WNMU. From academics to student life and more time with my family, WNMU is a great place for students to advance in their environment and never get lost in the crowd. That’s our story. Back to you, Alex.

– How cool is that! Stacey, your experience at WNMU really is a family affair. It’s great to hear that WNMU makes it possible for students of all ages, goals and passions to find success and chase their dreams. Plus, those science labs look awesome. Thanks again for sharing, Stacey.
