The Value of a Professional Degree with Ryan
Segment #6 from Florida A&M University

Hey everyone. What I appreciate about FAMU Law is it has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally while balancing real responsibilities at home. You see, before this, I was in the Navy for seven years where I became a husband and a father. So choosing the right law school wasn’t about finding the best institution for me, it was about finding the right fit for my family.
As a parent, I approach law school with a level of focus and discipline, and that has pushed me into natural leadership roles, like being the chair of the Parents Attending Law School committee, where I work with administrators to support student parents. The coursework is rigorous but practical. I’m taking what I learn here, and I’m applying it to real world experiences.
I’ve been able to work with federal judges in their chambers and get opportunities at internships at some of the best private firms. I’m also a junior editor on FAMU’s Law Review, where I’ve been able to develop my legal writing, and I had the opportunity to be on the moot court team and sharpen my advocacy skills.
Everything here at FAMU Law feels connected as you build towards the lawyer you wanna be. FAMU Law creates an environment where you’re expected to step up and take ownership of your own career and experience. Whether you’re a part-time student or a full-time student, FAMU Law gives you an opportunity to lead, compete, and engage with the ever-growing legal community.
Taking advantage of those opportunities makes a big difference in how prepared you feel to move into the practice of law. This experience has taught me how to manage pressure, stay disciplined, and lead with compassion. I’m focused on a career in commercial litigation and growing as an advocate. Thank you for letting me share my story.
Take care.
