Unlocking Doors Through Science with Jetta

Segment #1 from Indiana State University

Transcript

Hey everyone, I’ve spent most of my life in Terre Haute, so Indiana State University was very familiar to me. But the honors college, as well as the faculty and the state-of-the-art laboratories are truly what led me to go to school here. Within my first weeks, I was introduced to instrumentation and laboratory techniques that I had never seen in my life.

My professors were very helpful in their instruction and I became intrigued with the scientific processes involving certain physiological mechanisms. This led me to the summer undergraduate research experience, where I’ve had the opportunity for the past two summers to research a protein called lactoferrin.

Through this, I’ve expanded my network by traveling and presenting my findings at conferences. I’ve learned so much through this experience, and I’m excited to continue my research this summer as well. Beyond the lab, Indiana State has been my home away from home. This campus has brought me some of my very best friends, girls who will be bridesmaids in my future wedding, mentors that I’ll have access to for years to come, as well as a professional foundation that has helped prepare me for my future career as an OBGYN.

When I think of Indiana State and the memories I’ve made here, I also think of Timmy Global Health, which gave me the opportunity to travel to Ecuador. We set up clinics in the rural mountains where patients would travel up to three hours by foot to receive health services. I had never served in this way before, and it was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life.

I am beyond grateful for the opportunities like these, as well as the friends and memories Indiana State has given me. I hope our campus is a place where you can experience all this and more. I can’t wait to see you on campus.
