Home Away From Home with Jamel
Segment #1 from Florida A&M University

What’s going on, everyone? I’m originally from the Bronx, New York, so coming to Tallahassee as an out-of-state student was definitely a big change. But honestly, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and now I’m a broadcast journalism major here at Florida A&M University. Through my roles as Mr.
University Housing and as a resident assistant, I’m also a campus ambassador. I always recommend that students embrace on-campus living because that’s where their college experience really begins. Campus housing is more than just a place to live. It’s where support begins, and it’s where you find your people.
For me, Attack Dance Crew was my first family on campus. It gave me structure, support, and a sense of belonging early on. And now, as a resident assistant in Village West, I built another family with my fellow RAs, people I work alongside, learn from, and grow with every day, while also supporting my residents and helping them feel at home.
Living on campus gives students a comfortable, modern environment where community naturally forms, especially in places like FAMU’s newest residence hall, Venom Landing. And when you step off campus, Tallahassee has a vibe of its own. Whether it’s hanging out with friends at Cascades Park, grabbing food at Olean’s, or exploring art and culture at the Railroad Square Art District, there’s always something to do, and it’s even better with your people.
Being a FAMU student has taught me how to step outside my comfort zone, build connections, and really create my own experience. FAMU didn’t just give me a place to live, they gave me a place to belong. That’s my story. See you on campus.
