From Mexico to Indiana – Diving Into New Opportunities with Dany

Segment #7 from Indiana State University

Transcript

Hi, everyone. My Indiana State University journey began in 2021 when I moved from Mexico City to join the Sycamore diving team. Transitioning to a new country was a big step, but I chose Indiana State because of its vision. Here, you aren’t just a student or an athlete. The professors and staff truly value you as a person.

I graduated in May 2025 with my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering technology. I am now in my second semester of the engineering technology management graduate program. My goal is to become a structural engineering project manager, a career path I discovered through an internship with RGSE Inc. in California.

Indiana State’s engineering program has been vital in preparing me for the industry. In our small classes, I get personalized attention from professors who understand my goals. The program is incredibly hands-on, offering everything from research opportunities to classroom projects. But my experience here goes beyond the classroom.

As an athletic communications graduate assistant for Sycamore Athletics, I work in sports information, managing media for our soccer and softball teams. This role has taught me how to lead and communicate under pressure. It has also given me the opportunity to connect with Terre Haute community members who are extremely warm and welcoming.

I found my closest community through athletics. The swim and dive team is one of the most diverse groups we have on campus. Being surrounded by other international student athletes helped me embrace our different backgrounds, and we learn so much from each other. That diversity is what made Terre Haute feel like home immediately.

Indiana State has given me more than a degree. It gave me a family and the confidence to take on the world. I’ll always be proud to be a Sycamore. Now, see you on campus soon.
