Research and Leadership Opportunities with Michael
Segment #11 from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
Transcript
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about LECOM. When choosing a medical school, I wanted a place that would prepare me for residency while also providing opportunities for me to grow outside of the classroom. With step one now pass/fail, research and leadership have become more important than ever, and that’s one of the reasons why Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine stood out to me.
LECOM offers a wide variety of student organizations, specialty clubs, and leadership opportunities that allow students to build connections and explore their interests early on. Serving on executive boards has helped strengthen my leadership skills and connect to physicians across different specialties.
As president of the radiology club, I started a board review lecture series, and through our student research association, I helped initiate a summer research internship program that introduces students to research and guides them towards presentation and publication opportunities. What I appreciate most is how supportive the faculty are when it comes to student research.
Many professors involve students in ongoing clinical and literature-based projects, and LECOM supports conference attendance. Because of the support, I’ve been able to present research at state, national, and international conferences. Events like LECOM Research Day even allow students to showcase their work a little closer to home.
Beyond strengthening residency applications, research at LECOM teaches students to think critically, collaborate across disciplines, and contribute meaningfully to medicine. LECOM helped me match into my top residency program in radiology, and I truly feel the support system here made that possible.
Thanks, LECOM.
