Student Success and Wellness with Michael
Segment #18 from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
Transcript
Hello, everybody. One of the primary reasons why I chose the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is because I wanted a medical school experience that reflected real patient care from the very beginning. As a current second lieutenant in the US Army and ROTC graduate, I became accustomed to learning through teamwork, communication, and hands-on problem-solving, and I wanted a medical school education that reflected that, and that’s what I found in LECOM’s problem-based learning pathway.
Rather than simply passively listening to lectures, we work the clinical case together, analyze patient information, develop differential diagnoses, and discuss treatment options as a team. This process challenged us to think critically and communicate effectively while learning how to approach medicine like a physician.
One of the most valuable parts of my experience has been the support system at LECOM. The collaborative environments between students and faculty has helped me to grow tremendously in both confidence and competence. When I first started out, I honestly felt overwhelmed, but the encouragement from classmates, teachers, and the academic resources really helped me to adjust quickly and to become more confident contributing during cases.
LECOM also emphasizes balance and resilience. Whether through wellness initiatives, peer support, or simply the campus culture itself, students are encouraged to take care of themselves while pursuing a rigorous education. For me, choosing LECOM was about becoming an active physician and preparing myself to think like a physician, not just memorize information for an exam.
Now, I feel confident and prepared for the next step in my career.
Thanks for listening. See you around.
