Segment #2 from Ohio University

Transcript

Next up, let’s meet Joy. Joy never imagined she’d travels so far from her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama for college. But in Ohio University’s fun and welcoming residential and campus life, she found a home away from home. Over to you, Joy.

– Hey y’all and thanks for that introduction Alex, Growing up at Alabama, I always thought that I would go to school in the South. I’m the oldest of four, and I wanted to be a good role model for my siblings. I graduated at the top of my class and also a student body president. It wasn’t until my advisor at College PrepU introduced me to Ohio that I decided to apply and I’m forever grateful for that. Finding my community was essential. As a freshman, I’m already involved in organizations, including Ebony Minds, the African Student Association, the Black Student Communication Caucus and UCC, the Underclass and connect, which helps new multicultural students get more connected on campus. Without a doubt, my favorite place on campus is the Multicultural Center. The staff there feels like families. I can go there for support, or if I even just wanna hang out between classes. Ohio’s unique approach to the residential experience allows for students to see and live alongside people with common interests and goals, honors and scholars, LGBTQ, and Links Program housing for first year, multicultural students, are just some of Ohio’s specialized housing experiences. Our dining hall offers options that fit people from many different backgrounds, vegan, gluten free and international dishes, to halal friendly and locally sourced ingredients. Ohio is split into five unique greens. North, South, West and East have residence hall, and you’ll visit College Green on your way to class. South Green is home to Ping Recreation Center and the football stadium. Across from West Green, you’ll find the Congregation Center where many indoor sporting events are held. East Green’s infamous Jeff Hill leads you to North Green where you’ll find academic buildings and Hudson Health Center. Coming from Alabama, I was afraid that I wouldn’t find my community, but that thought quickly went away. The many experiences that Ohio has given me have been nothing short of amazing. That’s my story, Alex, back to you.

– Thank you, Joy. It sounds like Ohio’s intentionally small residence halls help build tight knit communities. It’s easy to see why you feel at home right here. Thanks again for sharing your story.
