Excellence In Action with Audrey
Segment #5 from Sweet Briar College
Transcript
Say hello to Audrey, an honor student balancing academics, equestrian life, and independent research. From studying the Virginia wine market to riding in national equestrian competitions, Audrey’s story shows how Sweet Briar students pursue excellence in so many ways, and that they always have support from professors, and proud alumni, every step of the way. Audrey, the floor is yours.
– Thanks, Alex. Hey, everyone. Growing up, I loved learning, but I truly thought horses would be my whole life. I didn’t know that I could balance my passion for riding with academics, until I found this hidden gem. Sweet Briar offers a supportive space for women’s sports, while still emphasizing academic excellence and success. Sweet Briar takes academics seriously, and is one of the few colleges I found that offers merit-based scholarships. I also get to keep my horse on campus, and be part of a supportive team, all while excelling academically. Professors here work one-on-one with students, often serving as both instructors and advisors. They’re incredibly accessible and check in regularly. We’re also able to tap into the grant for engaged learning by the beginning of our sophomore year. This supports research projects, artistic endeavors, entrepreneurial activities, travel internships, and job shadowing. This allowed me to present my thesis at the Virginia Association of Economists’ Annual Conference. The honors program has been a highlight of my experience, allowing me to blend my two majors, Environmental Science and Economics into a unique area of study. I’m currently researching the Virginia wine market, which is especially fitting on our campus’s 18 acres of vineyards on over 2,800 acres of land. At Sweet Briar, academic support doesn’t end at graduation. Alumni are incredibly involved, offering mentorship, career guidance, and even personal check-ins. From authors to Olympians, engineers and state senators, our alumni network is powerful. Even President Mary Pope Hutson traveled to Florida to cheer on our equestrian team at nationals. Thanks to the support from Sweet Briar, I’ve built a resume full of hands-on, honors-level experience. My time here has truly prepared me for a future in the Virginia wine industry. Back to you, Alex.
– Audrey, combining your love for the environment and economics into a career path is truly what Sweet Briar’s all about. Your experience shows how far a supportive academic and alumni network can take you. We’re so inspired by your drive and love that you’re already thinking about giving back as an alum. Cheers to your bright future.
