Ask Admissions – Kennesaw State University

Okay everyone, let’s head on over to our next hotspot on campus. Here we’re meeting up with Rylee. She’s a senior majoring in journalism and emerging media here at KSU. She works here on the sports broadcasting team in the athletics program. What an awesome opportunity to practice your craft Rylee. Okay, so tell us a little more about athletics.

– Thanks, Alex. What’s going on everyone? Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be in the sports field, more specifically become a sports broadcaster. When I heard that Kennesaw State was close to home and they had a great journalism program, I knew I had to go. Kennesaw State gives me the opportunity to utilize the skills that I learned in the classroom and put them to test in the real world. Thanks to the KSU athletic program, I have the opportunity to be on the ESPN+ broadcast, interview athletes and so much more. Kennesaw State is big enough for these opportunities while letting students be involved. Thanks to the KSU athletics and journalism program, I’ll have a relevant reel and portfolio ready for when I graduate. Kennesaw State also has great facilities and amenities for athletes, faculty, and staff to enjoy that makes the sports world go round. With Saturdays here at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, events hosted at the Convocation Center, I’ve always been interested in watching KSU athletics. Kennesaw State also gives students the opportunities to get involved in club and intermural sports at our student rec center. When I first arrived at KSU I didn’t imagine that I would be as involved as I am now. This university has given multiple platforms for students to succeed. Hooty hoo! I’ve gained positive feedback from both my supervisors and my professors. This is just proof that Kennesaw State gives the right tools for me to have a jumpstart before graduation. That’s all from me. Go long Alex.

– Nice throw, Rylee. We appreciate you telling us how KSU is supporting students with their interests in sports, fitness, and hobbies. The extended possibilities outside of the field definitely sounds like a cool way to get involved before graduating. Cheers, Rylee.

Okay, we’re gonna check out our next student Jacob. Jacob is majoring in mechatronics here at KSU as a junior. He’s gonna talk to us about all the amazing hands on experiences available at Kennesaw State as well as the various programs he gets to be part of. Jacob, that’s an awesome major man. Take it away.

– Hey, everyone. When I was looking for a college, I wanted to study something I was passionate about and have an amazing experience living on campus. KSU had just that. I signed up for the mechatronics program, the only one in Georgia. When I went on the campus tour, I fell in love with the Marietta campus, which felt active and close knit. I live in Hortnet Village on the Marietta campus and I’m just feet away from all my classes and the exciting activities on campus. I enjoyed student housing so much that I became an RA for KSU’s housing residence life. As an RA, I became involved to help support my community and residents 24/7. The best part about being an RA is getting to host all kinds of fun events. I’ve gotten to organize everything from small get togethers to campus wide occasions. I love being part of such a helpful organization alongside our other on-call RAs and professional staff. Only a few steps away from my home on campus is the dining hall. KSU has two award-winning dining halls that offer a variety of delicious meals as well as rotational options like KSU’s favorite, Fried Chicken Thursday. KSU also has national brands such as Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Mo’s and more. Living on campus has been an amazing experience. It’s given me valuable connections and friendships within the KSU community. I’m happy to know that I’m pursuing a degree I love while gaining life skills for the future. I’m proud to be a KSU Owl. Alex, you’ve gotta try this fried chicken. For now, what’s next?

– Wow, that definitely has me hungry for more. Working at KSU certainly gives you a distinct perspective. Programs like mechatronics, owned and specialized by Kennesaw State, helps make your journey so unique. These real world experiences here at KSU are gonna help drive your passion to the next level. Thanks for that valuable insight, Jacob. Take care.

Okay, let’s head over to Mahari, a junior architecture major. Mahari is gonna speak about her unique experience and how learning through engagement has truly encouraged her. You’re gonna wanna watch this. Let’s hear it Mahari.

– Thanks, Alex. Hey, everyone. Growing up in New York City, I was surrounded by and obsessed with art and architecture. When applying for colleges I was immediately interested in Kennesaw State University’s architecture program since it offered lots of opportunity for hands on learning. As a third year architecture student, I love how the program has opened my eyes to design and changed the way I think daily. At KSU, I’ve been able to express my creativity by combining my studies with my personal hobbies of painting, creating YouTube content, film, and photography. With access to KSU’s amazing labs with the latest tools, I’ve been able to create various models, drawings, and diagrams. During my freshman year, I used a variety of tools in the wood shop that I never had the opportunity to use before. During my sophomore year, I was exposed to materials such as concrete that allowed me to create unique physical designs. This year I used both the laser cutting and 3D printing machine. The tools and facilities here at KSU have fostered my growth as a student and positively impacted my love for architecture. Along with labs, our class also ventures on trips, where we learn about architecture in the city of Atlanta. As an out state student, I enjoyed that I was able to explore the city. Every semester our class also goes on site visits, where we analyze a setting that we later design. When I first started at KSU, I never would’ve thought that I’d gain even more passion for architecture. Being able to learn from professionals in the field with a very hands on approach has pushed me closer to my dreams. Meeting people with similar goals and aspirations has been inspiring. Alex, back to you.

– Mahari, great job and what a story. It’s impressive to me how you came from the hub of breathtaking architectural design in New York City to come and study at KSU. I’m happy to know that this university is backing your creative ability with those innovative facilities. Absolutely fantastic. Thanks for sharing your story, Mahari.

All right, everyone, let’s head over and meet Alex. By the way great name, I love it. Alex is a sophomore majoring in communications here at KSU. He’s gonna talk to us about his personal story of overcoming and pushing forward with the help of KSU resources despite falling ill with meningitis. Alex, you are up.

– Hi, everyone. Thanks so much, Alex. Looks like we’re name twins. I’m a transfer student from college in Tennessee. I got an apartment here, I got my family here, closer to home. This place is just from there. When I was a freshman in college at Nashville, I got very sick. I had mono, which turned into a brain infection. I was in hospitals, rehabilitation for most of 2019. My whole life was interrupted. I had to relearn how to walk, talk, everything so being somewhat close to home is important. I love Kennesaw. It’s offers a variety of classes. I changed my major from business to communications because I really enjoy communications classes. I hope to blend my love of music with communications degree to create a future in the music and entertainment business. My instructors at Kennesaw have been amazing at guiding me in that direction. Because of my brain injury, I’m fortunate enough to receive academic aid and accommodations. Also, I love the Kennesaw campus. I reserve music rooms and practice for upcoming gigs. But my favorite part of campus is the dining hall. The beef brisket is my favorite thing that they have. It’s amazing. Socially, KSU is great too. I play rec basketball, ultimate Frisbee and handball. There are lots of venues nearby where I play my guitar. I play open mic nights at Madlife just close to KSU. Despite my setbacks for my sickness, Kennesaw State’s communication program has show me in future to prepare me for amazing possibilities. Everyone’s college journey is different. I’m a lucky guy discovering mine at Kennesaw State. That’s my story. Back to you, Alex.

– Wow, Alex, what an inspiration. To be able to stay dedicated and resilient despite your circumstances is truly, truly amazing. Being a part of such an inclusive and accessible university like Kennesaw State is absolutely an essential requirement as you move forward with your bright future. Thanks again for sharing your story, Alex. Take care.

Okay, let’s go ahead and meet up with the amazing student Bethany. Bethany is in her junior year here at Kennesaw State and is majoring in organizational communications. She’s gonna talk us through all of the accessible and innovative resources that KSU has to offer to make sure their students are successful. Bethany, talk us through the possibilities.

– Thanks, Alex. Growing up, I was super close to my family so coming to KSU I knew I really wanted to connect with the community. I didn’t have a lot of connections and a lot of friends from high school weren’t coming so I didn’t really know where to get plugged in. The first place I checked was student organizations. One of the clubs I joined was Delight at Kennesaw State. Delight is an all girls ministry that has changed my life for the better. It was there that I met so many awesome girls who were very genuine about life. During that first semester, I really began to realize how much KSU was rooted in growing my identity. I eventually found several organizations that really helped change my life for the better. Additionally, KSU also offers several resources to help students who are struggling to find their place. They offer free counseling and the staff there are professionally trained, kind and there to help you. Academically, KSU also offers lots of resources that are super beneficial to students. The writing center has really come in handy when I’ve needed help with some writing assignments and the tutoring center has really come in clutch when I’ve needed help with homework. Here at KSU, I’ve learned that the most important thing is becoming who you’re meant to be through the community that you built. Kennesaw State has been key in helping me grow my future possibilities to the fullest. Now the question is, what’s next for us, Alex?

– Absolutely brilliant Bethany. It’s great that KSU has helped you grow towards being the person you wanna be. And with all these resources to support your passions, who wouldn’t be excited. Students certainly have a lot of amazing benefits being part of the KSU community. Thank you, Bethany and cheer to you.

Next, we’re heading over to catch up with Devon. This guy is truly inspiring. He’s originally from Ghana and he’s a junior psychology major. Devon is gonna talk us through the importance of having such a diverse community around him. Let’s hear about it, Devon.

– Thanks, Alex. What’s good everyone? You guys have made it to the best part. Ever since I was younger, I had a passion for helping people and that has made me wanna study psychology. When I had my first tour here in high school, it hit me that I had to be here. For me, I feel like KSU has one of the most amazing psychology programs that I know of. Many of my classes are filled with students and faculty members from diverse backgrounds. As a native Ghanaian, it was great to see that Kennesaw State’s campus is so diverse, including other students like me from Africa and other countries. Finding your community is so important and for me, it was great to be able to meet up and chill after class with them. Having that connection made me feel more at home. This gave me a strong sense of security and support as we tackle classes and became more involved at Kennesaw State. At KSU, I have grown so much as a person. I look back over the last two years and I’m proud of the person that I’m becoming. I’ve learned more than just concepts in my major, but I’ve also gained a new perspective from meeting others. It’s good to say that the opportunities KSU has given me are so rewarding. That’s all I got, back to you Alex.

– Devon, I’m so happy that you’re in a program that supports your dream and desire to be part of the diversity that makes KSU so unique. Kennesaw State is clear on their goal of encouraging and supporting individuals from various backgrounds and cultures. By learning from one another, this college is producing strong agents for an exciting future. It’s been real Devon. Thanks again.

You all are gonna love our next student. Her name is Gabrielle. She’s a sophomore here at KSU studying media and entertainment with a minor in music and entertainment. Gabrielle is gonna talk to us through what research with relevance means for her at Kennesaw State. Take it away Gabrielle.

– Hooty hoo. Hi, Alex. Growing up I never saw anyone on screen who looked like me and that’s how I knew I wanted to join the entertainment industry. Kennesaw State has a really cool program that allows students to go on studio a lot while still in college and that’s what brought me to the university. Another cool thing about KSU is their opportunity for research. Who would’ve thought you could prepare a research on film. Well, you can. As a part of the first year scholars program, I got to collaborate early on in my career through some really cool research with people here. And if you’re an upperclassman, the office of undergraduate research offers opportunity for you to get faculty mentors as well. With all these resources in place, it’s no wonder that KSU is one of the largest suburban research universities in the nation. One of the best experiences I’ve had so far is a chance to work on the women’s film and television screenwriters project with my mentor Anna Weinstein. The research we did was featured in the Kennesaw State research journal. We also received second runner off at the 2021 Kennesaw State Symposium. Two years ago, I never would’ve imagined that such relevant research was even an opportunity for humanities major like me. But KSU has made easy for me to achieve my goal of being involved in TV and entertainment while still discovering new possibilities. That’s all for me Alex, take it away.

– That’s wonderful Gabrielle. It’s awesome that KSU is giving you chances to further your research in such a versatile industry like media and entertainment. Sounds to me like no matter what program you’re involved with, Kennesaw State has organizations and research opportunities that are relevant to your interests and major. Thanks again for sharing your story and keep spreading those wings. Take care.

All right, let’s head over to meet Hunter. Hunter is in his senior year at Kennesaw State and is majoring in construction management. He’s gonna talk to us about some of the amazing academic programs available here at KSU. Hunter, walk us through the academic construction going on.

– Thanks, Alex. Hey everyone and hooty hoo. I’m a senior here at Kennesaw State University studying construction management. My journey in becoming an Owl began the first semester of my junior year when I transferred here to pursue my degree. From the moment I stepped into the construction management department, my classmates, professors and the KSU community made me feel so welcome. I truly enjoyed feeling like an important part of the Owl family. This leads to more engaging classroom sessions where we’re not only learning material from our textbooks, but from the hands on real world experiences within our industry. In addition to the awesome classroom environment at KSU, students are encouraged to get involved with clubs, student competition teams, and their own independent interest. I’ve been involved with Sigma Lambda Chi, the international construction honor society and the construction student competition teams here on campus. KSU’s investment in students goes far beyond the classroom. During my time here, I’ve gotten to meet with some of the best companies in the industry at career fairs, company sponsored events, industry discussion panels, and many more. At KSU, they truly bring the industry to you. That’s been my life and experiences as a construction management major here at Kennesaw State. But no matter what path you choose, KSU has the degree program for you with over 150 degree programs and majors in the arts, STEM fields, nursing, cybersecurity, business, and many more, the options are truly endless. Hey Alex, how’s that for a buildup?

– Wow, that’s incredible Hunter. I’m excited to see what you construct in your near future. Kennesaw State has more than just a diverse population and community. They have diversity within their program offerings. This university understands that no two students are alike and that’s exactly how they’ve structured their degree options. Thank you, Hunter, that was perfect.

Now we’re taking a look at all of the wonderful things Trey has been a part of here on campus. He’s a sophomore here at Kennesaw State, majoring in media and entertainment. Trey is gonna give us a really great overall picture of what campus life means to him. We’re ready for you Trey. It’s all yours.

– Alex, thank you boss. I appreciate you. Growing up in Atlanta, I knew that I wanted to be moderately close to home but at the same time, I wanted a fresh new environment. After my tour of Kennesaw State, my choice became a no brainer. The overall aesthetic of KSU campus was electrifying. I thought to myself, look at this amazing place and all the possibilities. It wasn’t until my second semester of my freshman year that I realized my passion for on-camera storytelling. The connections I made with new people around campus and in my department really helped me find my way. Kennesaw State has interaction at its core. I spend a lot of time with friends having fun and playing sports on the campus green and the state-of-the-art student rec center. There’s something about the campus life here that makes you feel connected. The courses I’ve taken really helped me advance personally, and I know they’ll help me professionally. I made a lot of lasting friendships, both through classes and the fun interactive events on campus that have added to my experience and have helped shape the person I am today. With increased knowledge and experiences, I’ll continue to learn from the media and entertainment program here at KSU. In the future, I’ll be able to interact with more on camera opportunities. I look forward to many more possibilities to share with my peers that help push me towards the career of my dreams. Thank you, and keep being perfect Alex.

– I appreciate that Trey. I have to say, your experience coming to KSU and learning amongst your peers is fascinating. Creating connections with other students and faculty members and taking advantage of the organizations here on campus is what truly makes for an all inclusive college experience. Trey, keep pushing forward and you will get your shot. Take care and thanks again.
