Identity & Belonging with Johnrey

Let me introduce you to Johnrey, a singer, actor, activist, model, content creator, and all around entertainer. Cal State Fullerton has many programs that create engagement opportunities to empower, educate, and activate students in the areas of social justice, equity and self-expression. Johnrey, tell us more about how Cal State Bulletin supports students’ passion for individuality and entertainment. Take it away.

– Thank you so much for that introduction, Alex, and hello future Titans. Growing up with a big personality, I always have known that I wanted to be a performer and entertainer. I would seize every opportunity that I had to perform at every talent show I could join. I then got into fashion and modeling that showcased the power and the beauty of authentic self-expression, especially as a queer person of color. I knew in choosing a university, I would have to leave my hometown and move to a place with more opportunities. Moving hundreds of miles away from home can be nerve wracking. Well, it’s a good thing that Cal State Fullerton prides itself in creating a strong sense of belonging through diversity and inclusivity. CSUF housing provides themed housing communities to help develop a strong sense of community and support. I’m a part of the Ujima housing community, which aims to give Black identifying students a stronger connection to students, resources and staff on campus. Within this community, I have made strong friendships with other Black and queer students through weekly game nights and Ujima events. These friendships have been crucial to my wellbeing. The diversity initiatives and resource centers have played a huge role in my experience as a first year. The LGBTQ’s Resource Center’s Annual Drag Show gives an opportunity to students to showcase their talents. So I joined and I won the competition. I was able to be featured on the school newspaper, The Daily Titan and Tusk Magazine. This allowed me to share my story and my passion for authentic self expression. On top of providing resources in a powerful community, CSUF is nurturing my passion for entertainment and individuality. I’m grateful to be a part of CSUF’s renowned theater and dance program, which will help me reach my goal in becoming an entertainer and an advocate for individuality. Until next time, future Titans and back to you, Alex.

– Johnrey, thanks for sharing your inspiring journey. There’s incredible support here on campus through those themed housing communities and vibrant diversity initiatives. Cal State Fullerton is dedicated to supporting all of its students and is ranked number three in the nation for bachelor degrees earned by underrepresented students. Sounds like an amazing place to grow and thrive. Thanks again, Johnrey.

Okay. Let’s hear from June, a first generation college student from Kenya who found a community with students who share common identities. Cal State Fullerton is deemed a FirstGen Forward institution providing various support services to those who are first in their family to go to college. June, tell us all about the resources and support you’ve found on campus. Take it away.

– Thanks, Alex. I’ve always had the desire to serve my community. I was born and raised in Kenya, and opportunities like attending a university were limited and seemed out of reach. Upon migrating to the United States, I realized that seeking a higher education would be a key step to achieving my goal. Navigating through the American College system as a first gen student was definitely a challenge, but with a strong support system and community at Cal State Fullerton, it all became achievable. With support from programs such as I Am First, there are plenty of resources that include career readiness, mentoring and coaching, networking opportunities and scholarships. Cal State Fullerton is recognized as a FirstGen Forward institution offering so many opportunities and resources for first gen students like myself. Another challenge was being in a new place where I also had to find a new space where my background was being represented. The African American Resource Center introduced me to organizations such as the Black Student Union, the Nigerian Student Association, and the Black Business Student Association. These organizations create a community of belonging, cultivate leadership and advance social justice here at Cal State Fullerton. My goal has always been to serve my community. I want to work in the healthcare field and learn the foundations of our healthcare systems. Cal State Fullerton’s Public Health Department offers courses that help guide me through the diverse paths in which my degree could help a community. The professors, also being public health professionals, have given me ample advice on these fields in which I will hopefully build a career in. Aiming to become a certified health educator and later obtain my master’s in public health, focusing in maternal and child health. All these goals and aspirations are accompanied with a great support system from my community here at Cal State Fullerton. That’s my story. Back to you, Alex.

– June, thank you for sharing your story. Your involvement in your various Titan communities is inspiring. With over 32% of the student population identifying as first generation college students, Cal State Fullerton is certainly a FirstGen Forward institution. Take care. June.

Let’s all welcome Mixtly, an alumni who has a lifelong connection to Cal State Fullerton through her local Latinx community. CSUF was awarded the Seal of Excelencia, which represents their commitment to excellence and all they do to serve Latinx students as a Hispanic serving institution. Mixtly, tell us more about your story and what you’ve been up to since graduation.

– Thanks, Alex. Hi, y’all. As a first generation Latinx student, it was important not just for me, but for my family that I picked the right college. However, since nobody else in my family had attended a university, it was very difficult and overwhelming to find the right place for me. Luckily, I regularly attended the Cal State Fullerton Center for Healthy Neighborhood, a place where dedicated Titans and students and staff work together to be able to end the cycle of poverty within the Latinx community in Fullerton by providing resources, and education, and health. Here I met the wonderful center director and faculty. They helped me find tutors to improve my education and also inspired my long-term involvement in community service. Most CSUF students at the center are from Latinx communities and experience similar struggles. Despite all these challenges, the center left a lasting impression on me. I knew that I wanted to attend a university that empowered its faculty and its students. I wanted to be a Titan. If you don’t know what to major in, situating yourself on campus is a pretty good place to start. This is why I joined the TRIO Student Success Program. They essentially help first generation students academically and socially. I also interned at Titan TV. They helped me build connections, expand my skillset, and they also taught me everything there is to know about writing, producing, and set production. Through these experiences, I gain the confidence in my choice to double major in cinema, television arts and business entrepreneurship. At Cal State Fullerton, no matter what major or majors you pick, there will be students, peers, faculty, and clubs that will help you succeed. Currently, I’m trying to find my place in the entertainment industry, so what do you think, Alex, does The College Tour need an intern? Back to you.

– What an amazing journey. CSUF has a network of over 300,000 alumni just like Mixtly with inspiring stories of their time here. The alumni association provides opportunities to stay connected to the CSUF community and highlights both school and alumni accomplishments. I’ll get back to you on that internship, Mixtly. Take care.

Let’s talk with Ariana, a local who has spent her whole life growing up right here in the city of Fullerton. This beautiful campus is just a short drive from Disneyland, the beach and Fullerton’s charming downtown area. It’s safe to say there’s plenty to do around here, on and off campus. Let’s explore more of the area with Ariana.

– Thanks, Alex. When applying to different universities, I knew I not only wanted to go somewhere with a great communications program, but also somewhere with a diverse selection of on-campus organizations. Who knew that the perfect school was so close to me? I actually grew up right here in Fullerton and I like to tell people we’re in a great location, only miles away from Orange County Beaches, theme parks and Los Angeles. There’s also so much to do here, like going to downtown Fullerton and checking out the different coffee shops, thrift stores, and restaurants. There’s always something happening on campus too, like going to one of our division one sports team events or checking out a farmer’s market, hosted by our very own associated Students Incorporated team. Cal State Fullerton has over 300 on-campus organizations and clubs. One of the organizations that I’m a part of is Titan Radio, the university’s online freeform radio station. Any student, no matter their major, can host their own hour long radio show. I’ve been doing this since my freshman year and it’s been a great way for me to not only improve my communication skills, but also prepare me for a potential career in radio. I’m also part of the university’s honors program, and I’m currently working on my senior honors project. Under a faculty led mentorship, I’ll be presenting my honors project to my community at the end of my senior year. This project is contributing to my overall learning and connecting me with future employment and job opportunities. Cal State Fullerton is an incredible school for me, allowing me to balance both my creative and my academic interest. I’ve made some of my best friends here and I can’t wait to see what the rest of my time here has in store for me. Back to you Alex. Hi everyone. Welcome back to Titan Radio, the sound of CSUF.

– What a beautiful city. Ariana, thank you for showing us around Fullerton and kudos for excelling as a double minor, amazing. With Cal State Fullerton offering over 100 degree programs, it must be hard to choose just one. Many here have achieved national prominence through outstanding faculty and alumni achievements, and it’s clear you are on that path, Ariana, thanks again.

Let’s meet Brian. Since starting at Cal State Fullerton, he has embraced every opportunity to grow within the campus community. He’s currently working towards his master’s degree, but that wasn’t always his plan. CSUF had a transformative impact on his career and life and we can’t wait to hear all about it. Brian, tell us more about your time and continued involvement here on campus. Take it away.

– Thanks, Alex. Hi, everyone. Attending Cal State Fullerton was a really easy choice for me. Five years ago, I moved here from my hometown of San Diego to start my undergraduate journey. Today I’m proud to continue as a Titan now pursuing my master’s degree. When I got to CSUF, I promised myself I’d never say no to an opportunity and getting involved on campus changed everything for me. After moving on campus, I became an office assistant for the housing department and I fell in love with the on-campus community. I even became an RA so I could live, eat, and breathe Cal State Fullerton. I was cherishing every moment, from meeting incoming students to bonding with my residents, all while making incredible memories with my coworkers who became my closest friends. Even as a graduate student, my involvement didn’t stop. I took on the role of a graduate assistant in HR and joined the ASI Board of Directors with my best friends. I loved everything that everyone I met here and I didn’t wanna leave, so I didn’t. The impact of my supervisors was so profound that I decided not to be a teacher anymore. I switched careers. I love my on-campus work and involvement so much that I decided to make a career out of it. Now I’m pursuing my master’s degree in higher education so I can continue working with college students and help them get as much out of their journeys as I have. Cal State Fullerton has transformed my life in ways I never imagined. As I prepare for a pre-work with college students, I help to impact their lives. Just as Cal State Fullerton has impacted mine, and that’s why I’m here. Back to you, Alex.

– Wow, Brian, it’s incredible to hear how Cal State Fullerton has influenced your path. It’s clear that once you start here at CSUF, you will not wanna leave. Brian, thank you for sharing your commitment to the campus community and your passion for supporting students, it truly stands out. Thanks again and take care.

Let’s catch up with Bettina. She was born here in Southern California, but raised in the Philippines. She found her place at Cal State Fullerton and embraced the Titan community by giving back through mentorship and student involvement. From leading campus tours to guiding others to study abroad, Bettina is a testament to the supportive and enriching environment at CSUF. Take it away, Bettina.

– Thanks, Alex. The path that first led me here was admittedly unconventional. Though I was born in Southern California, I spent much of my youth in the Philippines, so when I moved back to the states, I experienced a bit of difficulty assimilating to the American way of life. But once I entered Cal State Fullerton, the Titan community welcomed me with open arms. My freshman year I connected with several upperclassmen who mentored me and their insights were incredibly valuable and truly set me up for success. One piece of advice they gave me was to get involved, so I joined the Philippine American Students Association or PASA, and there I was able to connect with the large Filipino community throughout the West coast. I was also able to connect with other students at Friendship Games, an annual intercollegiate competition founded by PASA that has been occurring since 1986. The kindness and patience shown to me as a freshman, it inspired me and I wanted to pay it forward, so I became an orientation leader where I welcome newly admitted students and facilitated the orientation process. I also work as a Titan ambassador where I deliver campus tour and assist prospective students and their families. Another way I help students is by guiding them on their journey to studying abroad. I studied abroad in the south of Germany and had an amazing time. Now, I encourage other students to be courageous and explore the world. I’m proud to say I’ve accomplished much during my time at Cal State Fullerton, but none of which would be possible without the people I met along the way. This community fostered a safe space where I was able to grow and thrive. Now, after graduation, I hope to further my marketing career in the international entertainment and tourism industries. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me. Alright, Alex, you’re up.

– Bettina, it’s amazing to hear how Cal State Fullerton has shaped your journey and inspired you to give back. We know you’ll continue to make an impact as you pursue your career in international entertainment and tourism. Keep up the great work Bettina, and thanks again.

It’s time to meet Cassie, a recent graduate from OLLU and current professional softball player, and NAIA World Series champion. Cassie is here to tell us all about her journey at OLLU and how it shaped her to be the champion she is today. Cassie, throwing it over to you. Take it away.

– Thanks for the introduction, Alex. I’m a transfer student and a softball player who came to Our Lady of the Lake University three years ago, looking for a fresh start. I lived a large NCAA division 1 university for a small NAIA school on the west side of San Antonio. I felt a sense of belonging right away. From supportive teammates and wonderful professors to the gorgeous chapel and beautiful green spaces, everything at OLLU seemed too good to be true. From day one until now, I’ve been surrounded by people who have helped me grow as a person and as an athlete. The experience has been like finding a second family. I joined the softball team at just the right time. We’ve become a national powerhouse. We advanced to the NAIA World Series last year for the first time in school history. We were eliminated after the first two games, which was disappointing, but my teammates and I vowed to come back strong, and we did. This year, we returned to the World Series, swept all four games, and won the national championship. It was amazing. I pitched all four games and got to be part of the first team at OLLU to win a national championship at any sport. The impact has been phenomenal. Frost Bank lit up its 23-storey downtown building in OLLU blue. Fans welcomed us home with the celebration on the OLLU softball field. The San Antonio mayor issued a proclamation declaring June 6th as OLLU Women’s Softball NAIA World Series Champions Day. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined this or this. After the World Series, I signed a contract to play professional softball. OLLU has changed my life and I’m forever grateful. Now, back to you, Alex.

– Cassie, congratulations on your big win and your future career as a professional softball player. What an amazing day that must have been. Let us know when the next game is, and we are all coming to see you pitch. Thank you again for sharing your story.

It’s time to meet Abel, a senior visual and new media arts major from San Diego, California. He’s here to share his inspiring story of how after two decades in the Navy, he felt a calling to return to his passion, art. Abel, tell us about how OLLU is helping you return to your childhood dream. Please take it away.

– Thanks for that introduction, Alex. Hello, everyone. I grew up in Southern California in the 1980s, skateboarding the streets and creating artwork inspired by San Diego Chicano and surfside aesthetic. My dream was to go to art school. That dream took a 20 year pause when I joined the Navy and left my body a culture behind. My last station in the Navy was in San Antonio where I retired in 2019. The Veterans Administration helped me choose a school, and that’s how I discovered Our Lady of the Lake University. I registered without visiting the campus or knowing where it was located. When I arrived for my first class, I was surprised to find that it was in the heart of the city’s west side, the Barrio. I discovered that OLLU is a Hispanic-serving institution and the birthplace of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. School where most students looked like me. Two decades in the military left me feeling disconnected from my Mexican American culture, but when I arrived at OLLU, I found my culture right here. As a kid, I wanted to create artwork like I saw in the murals of San Diego. Today, I’m an intern with the San Antonio Street Art Initiative, a team of muralists that are transforming downtown San Antonio with their artwork. My childhood dream became a reality through the guidance of my art professor. She’s a visual artist who focuses on Chicano themes and Mexican American culture. I followed her instruction and advice to become the artist that I am today. When I finish school, I plan to write grants for community art projects, and organize solo and group art exhibitions. Many thanks to OLLU for helping me fulfill my aspirations. That’s my story. Now, back to you, Alex.

– Abel, we are absolutely amazed with your artwork. You have a true talent, and we can’t wait to see downtown San Antonio once you’re finished with it. Thank you for sharing your art with us. That was awesome.

Okay, everyone, let’s head over to meet up with Brynlee, a junior music education major from Eagle River, Alaska, and sister to someone we met earlier, Skylar. Brynlee is here to tell us about what she’s been involved in at OLLU. From admissions ambassador to the Spirit Team, there’s a lot to be involved in on-campus. Take it away, Brynlee.

– Thank you so much for that wonderful introduction, Alex. What’s up everybody? I grew up as a military brat bouncing around from place to place, and I spent my formative years in a small town called Eagle River, Alaska. All that traveling helped me develop a love for people and small town living. Although I initially wanted to attend a larger university, I found my sweet spot at Our Lady Lake University, a small school with big opportunities. At this incredible university, I enrolled as a music education major. I also became a tour guide and an admissions ambassador. In these roles, I am constantly meeting new people and making new friends. Best of all, I get to show them all the places and spaces I love at this university. One of my favorites is the beautiful mall area shaded by gorgeous live oaks. It’s the perfect place to study, relax, or hang out with friends. I also spend a lot of time right here in the gym inside the university Wellness and Activity Center. Here, I get to cheer on the volleyball and basketball teams alongside my cheer team. There’s nothing quite like a game day when the students fill the bleachers and the drum line rolls into action. The energy and electricity is amazing, and the good vibes do not stop outside the gym. This small town girl has found a home-like community here at OLLU. The students are friendly, and the faculty is engaging and supportive. When you walk across campus and see a professor, they’ll know you by your first name. I wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else. Back to you, Alex.

– Brynlee, it is so amazing that you’ve found a home away from home and game day sounds electric. We’ll have to make it back for a game. I cannot wait for that. Thank you for sharing your story and thank you for taking part in The College Tour.

Let’s meet Crista, a senior majoring in biology with double minors in chemistry and forensic science from right here in San Antonio, Texas. She’s a first generation student with a unique story about her journey to OLLU. Crista, tell us all about what made you choose OLLU. Take it away.

– Thanks, Alex. I have a long history with Our Lady of the Lake University. As a young girl, I lived four minutes away, passing by the beautiful campus daily and dreaming of attending, but way before that, my mother had been accepted but couldn’t attend because she became pregnant with me. With online programs not available at the time, she worked full-time to support us and never got the chance to return. Now years later, here I am at OLLU, fulfilling both my dream and my mother’s. OLLU has exceeded my expectations and provided a transformative experience. I’m a first generation student, a Latina changing my family’s dynamic and creating a new legacy. Here at OLLU, I am thriving academically and spiritually. As a biology major, I spend a lot of time in labs, which has been both an invaluable and rewarding experience. I’ve also been blessed with wonderful professors who provide excellent instruction and guidance. They know me by name and are easily accessible. I’ve also been blessed with great friends who, like me, enjoy visiting the grotto, attending mass, and learning in the labs. The university has been very generous, providing everything from financial support to meals during finals. The help I’ve received from everyone, faculty, students, and staff has made this higher education journey more than special. It’s been magical. My love for science has intensified to the point where I plan to pursue a master’s degree in biology after I graduate. I hope my accomplishments and journey inspires others, just like I was inspired to attend OLLU as a little girl. I think back to 5-year-old me looking at the great big buildings that resembled a castle. And now, inside those castle walls, I found the home. That’s all for now. Back at ya, Alex.

– Wow, Crista, it’s amazing that you’ve been dreaming of attending OLLU since you were little, and look at you now, pursuing a degree in science. Thank you for sharing both you and your family’s story, and good luck with your master’s degree. We know you’ll do great. Take care.
