Let’s hear from Ella, a Media & Communications major and a member of the Drew Women’s Soccer Team. Drew Ranger student-athletes are renowned for the dual passion they have for their sport and their academic careers. Let’s kick it over to Ella on the soccer field to learn more about the student-athlete experience right here at Drew. Take it away.
– Thanks, Alex. Hey, everyone. Growing up, I always wanted to play college soccer, but I also wanted to be able to balance my academics. When I first began my search for college, I was unsure about where I could envision my future. That changed when I discovered Drew University. The beautiful campus and location was the first thing that caught my attention. I knew I belonged here. Well, there are many aspects of Drew that I love. The athletics program and the exceptional athletic staff stand out as a favorite. There is a family-like atmosphere and opportunities for leadership. All of the athletes here are invested in the success of every team and it makes college feel much more special and rewarding. Even battling back from an injury all year, I was still a part of the supportive community. Additionally, our small class sizes provide me with increased interaction and many more opportunities to form strong bonds with my classmates and professors. We have so many opportunities here to study abroad and I’m planning for the New York City semester this spring. Being a part of the student athlete experience is enhancing my college journey by fostering discipline, teamwork, and time management skills, while also providing a sense of community, school spirit, and a balanced lifestyle that enriches both academic and personal growth. When I first started my college journey, I would not have imagined I would have learned and grown so much in just one year. I’ve been taught valuable lessons by my coaches, fellow athletes, friends, and professors. Drew University holds a special place in my heart because it has given me a home away from home and a community that I’m proud to be a part of. That’s my story. Kicking it back to you, Alex.
– Ella, thank you for sharing your experience of being a student and an athlete. Drew Rangers compete in 26 NCAA Division III varsity sports and have boasted championship titles, scholarly awards, and real-world experience during their careers in the forest. Go Rangers and thanks again, Ella.
Let’s meet Morgan, a Media & Communications major and Business minor. He’s taken full advantage of Drew’s scenic hometown of Madison and that easy train ride into the heart of New York City to hone his photography skills. He’s also turned his talents into an on-campus internship, gaining those valuable real world skills that Drew university bills into every student’s experience. Morgan, take it away.
– Hey, everyone. A few years ago, I fell in love with photography and videography and when I committed to Drew University, I knew it could help me center my future career on my hobby. Thanks to their media communications and business departments. I combined my love for photography and videography through an on-campus internship, which eventually turned into a job. The people I met through my jobs as the athletic and theater photographer helped me shape the artist I am today. Everyone was welcoming. Some of the highlights of my on-campus job included creating promotional videos and photos for upcoming theater performances and taking action shots of some of our division three sports teams. The location of Drew to downtown Madison made it easy to get photo and video supplies at the local camera store, and I had access to New York City with the train station having a direct line to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan. The opportunities provided by jobs and internships both on and off campus, can significantly pave the way to future careers and passions. Living on campus made it easy to have a place to go between classes, practice and work. Plus, it’s easy to make friends and feel involved in the community when you’re right here on campus. Now that I’ve graduated, I plan on working in the social media management and marketing fields. I’ve been brushing up on my disc golf skills and I plan on working with the PDGA. I can’t thank my professors enough for pushing me to create my best work and for encouraging me to find a job that’s right for me. Back to you, Alex.
– Morgan, it’s great to see your photography skills on display. Best of luck as you move into the working world, taking all the great experiences and opportunities from your time at Drew to thrive in the next stage. Congrats, Morgan.
Joining us to share his experience as a First-generation college student is Jose, an Economics major, minoring in Computer Science, Statistics and Writing Communications. Wow. Like many students at Drew, he takes advantage of being right outside New York City to advance his career opportunities. Let’s hear it, Jose.
– Thanks, Alex. Being born and raised in a Hispanic immigrant family, I’ve faced a lot of pressures and challenges. During my time at Drew University, I’ve experienced the benefits of mentorship, community and career development to help maximize my potential. Ensuring all students feel well equipped to take on their education and develop their careers is a priority at Drew. As a first generation college student, this is reassuring because I know I have a support system dedicated to helping students like me make the most of their education. One of the ways Drew provides this is through special academic programs like the Educational Opportunity Fund. Students in this program receive one-on-one mentorship and support, and they also obtain the physical resources and materials they may need. As a commuter student, being a member of this club and the current president is important to me because it’s one of the many ways I get to be involved on campus and represent my community. Career development has also been an important part of my journey and Drew’s New York semester programs play a big part in making students feel ready for a career. With seven different programs, including things like social impact, theater, and Wall Street, students can expand their classroom education by connecting with and learning from industry professionals and get a glance at what to expect from their future careers. The relentless support I received at Drew has prepared me for my internship at a financial services firm in New York City this summer. But don’t just take it from me, you can experience these amazing opportunities yourself here at Drew. But first, I’ll pass it back to you, Alex.
– Thank you for sharing your story, Jose. You are clearly taking advantage of all that Drew offers. From studying and interning in New York City, to developing your leadership skills, to making lifelong connections, all to set you up for a bright future. Take care, Jose.
Let us introduce you to Nicole, a double major in English and French, with minors in Psychology and Teaching. With Drew’s impressive list of programs, she stays busy with her academics. She’s also very active as a student leader on campus and a true advocate for the powerful community at Drew. Nicole, the floor is all yours.
– Thanks, Alex. When I started my college search, I knew I wanted an experience where I could get individualized attention while being a part of a supportive community. I thrive when I have personal connections with mentors who give me feedback and guidance. At Drew University, I get the mentorship I need in and out of the classroom. Drew is full of professors, staff and student leaders who are so passionate about what they do. That’s what drew me to work with admissions and the Office of Residence Life. As a student tour guide coordinator and a community advisor, I have found staff who care about my development as a student and also my professional development. They sought out my potential and gave me opportunities where they knew I would be challenged, but would also shine. In terms of academics, I’m a Baldwin honor scholar, so I’ve been spending a lot of time working on my thesis. My advisors have helped me hone in on my research, writing and critical thinking skills. Their guidance has led me to think differently and push my own ideas to new heights. The community mentality at Drew where everyone is helping each other grow is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I have a community within my classes, my residence hall, at work, and within clubs like our student newspaper, The Drew Acorn. Here at Drew, you can’t help but feel a part of something unique and special. The guidance I receive from staff and professors helps me discover my own potential. More importantly, it’s taught me how to do the same for others. I wanna pull out the best in people because Drew and all of my mentors and friends here have done that for me. Over to you, Alex.
– Wow, Nicole. How do you find the time to accomplish everything, from writing an honors thesis to giving tours to leading the student newspaper? It is clear the mentorship and community at Drew creates students who thrive just like you. Way to go, Nicole. Take care.
Let’s all welcome Josh, a recent graduate who majored in Biology, minored in Psychology, and found a home on the Drew University fencing team. Like many students at Drew, Josh is passionate about research. He’s had numerous opportunities to perform research alongside faculty and was even paid to do so over the summer. Josh, tell us all about it.
– Thanks for the intro, Alex. Hey, everyone. I knew coming outta high school, I wanted to be in an environment that was gonna challenge, inspire, and shape me into the person I knew I could become. Looking back now, choosing Drew University completely changed my life forever. Before attending Drew, it was my dream to become a doctor. I started my pre-med journey learning about the complex foundations of biology. We learned everything from the beauty of our ecosystems to an entire living world smaller than our own, filled with bacteria and viruses. I discovered I love the topic of these little organisms so much that I got an amazing opportunity to study them within a research lab alongside my faculty mentor. This opportunity has not only increased my passion for biology, but gave me the space to enjoy experimenting with all the success and mistakes that come with the process. My academic journey was important, but it was my admissions in athletic experience that really shaped who I am today. I was extremely shy coming outta high school. I didn’t think I would find any friends or fit into any clubs. Then I became a leader on my fencing team. The team was more than just family. We won together, we struggled together, but most importantly, we were there for one another. When I lack confidence, my team was there to inspire me and uplift me to keep going, it is that feeling of family that is the philosophy of Drew Athletics. When I’m asked, what is your favorite part of Drew, the first word that comes to mind is community. The students and faculty here are so passionate, caring, and ambitious, and it’s contagious. You see everyone around you doing so many great things and we start to think, I can do those things as well. Drew is truly a place to find yourself. Thank you so much for hanging out with me. They’re all yours, Alex.
– Wow, Josh, it is so cool to see you showing off those fencing and research skills. It sounds like you’ve found community both in and out of the classroom. Thank you for sharing your Drew experiences with us and your love of the biology lab. Take care.
To learn more about the First Year experience, let’s hear from Kamila, an International Relations and Philosophy major. Drew’s beautiful wooded campus, called The Forest, is the perfect home base. It’s a historic campus offering the comforts of small town living, the excitement of big city adventure and easy access to a world of opportunities. Kamila, please tell us about the opportunities you’ve experienced here on campus.
– Thanks, Alex. Hey, everyone. When I first toured Drew University, I knew the school was the place for me. I found love with the campus, the academics, and the opportunities to get involved. Freshman orientation eased me into the Drew experience, and I met many new friends. Getting involved at Drew is so easy. As an incoming freshman, I applied to be an action scholar, which placed me in an environment where I’m encouraged to create changes within my community. I’ve learned so much about my place in this world, like breaking down biases that can prevent people from truly helping others. I even had the opportunity to volunteer at the local preschool and apply everything I’ve learned. The Center for Civic Engagement has amazing people who have pushed me to become a spokesperson and a change maker. Drew’s also nicknamed a university in the forest and has beautiful greenery. I sometimes stop and take pictures of the campus as I walk to class. But not only is the campus filled with trees, it is also filled with opportunities. Just within my first month here, I joined student government where I’m able to work with administrators and advocate for student needs on their behalf. Drew makes advocating for students easy as they’re always willing to hear what the students want. I’ve grown more passionate about our student life and appreciate Drew for allowing me to be part of great changes so early in my college career. I’d never thought I’d be so involved so quickly as a freshman, but with the many clubs and events, you will find your place here. The beautiful campus is just the cherry on top of this great school. That’s all for me. Back to you, Alex.
– Kamila, thank you for sharing how Drew is the perfect space to explore, connect, make memories, and make a difference. Starting with move-in day, you’ll discover Drew is all about diving in and getting involved on a picture perfect campus. Look at this place. Thanks again, Kamila.
Jonathan is a junior from Midwest City, Oklahoma, majoring in Nursing. Jonathan has always been passionate about the medical field. And he’s here to share his experience with SWOSU’s renowned Nursing Program. Jonathan, we hear you’re involved in the Student Affairs Board and the Nursing Students Association. So tell us more about your time at SWOSU. Please take it away.
– Thanks, Alex. Hey, y’all. I always knew that I wanted to work in the medical field. When I discovered the career of nursing where knowledge meets compassion, I was hooked. I knew SWOSU was the place for me after touring and seeing how amazing the campus is. When I finally got my acceptance letter to be part of the SWOSU Nursing Program, I was elated. But I knew the hard work was just beginning. My experience in the School of Nursing has been the stuff of dreams. I’m on the Student Affairs Board and the current Co-President of our Nursing Students Association. SWOSU provides resources that prepare students for their future in healthcare, like our state-of-the-art Simulation Lab that offers hands-on practice from taking vital signs to starting an IV. SWOSU’s experienced faculty and staff offer academic advice and make us feel at home. The School of Nursing provides education opportunities that many schools lack, particularly through the Rural Healthcare System where making connections with patients is easier. SWOSU nurses are some of the most sought after in the state of Oklahoma. With the resources provided, we are ready for our clinical experience. As a SWOSU nursing student, you will see it all. Ooh, she’s not breathing. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2. Woo.
– Baby’s alive.
– Yes, good job. The program puts you in direct contact with many companies, hospitals, and overall opportunities from the start setting you up for career success. What’s next for me, you may ask? After graduating and taking the NCLEX, I will receive my license to become a registered nurse. I have been exposed to so many fields of nursing already, but I have fallen in love with one in particular and that is the pediatric intensive care unit. So I hope to work there someday. Well, this future nurse needs a coffee break. Back to you, Alex.
– Jonathan, it’s inspiring to hear how SWOSU’s Nursing Program has shaped your path. Your hands-on practice in the state-of-the-art Simulation Lab and the networking opportunities have certainly prepared you for life after graduation. Best of luck with your goal of working in the pediatric intensive care unit. Amazing. Take care.
Let’s all welcome Nayeli, a senior from Keyes, Oklahoma, who’s already earned her Associate’s Degree in the Medical Laboratory Technician Program at SWOSU and is now pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Health Science. Nayeli’s journey demonstrates the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students at the university from all walks of life. Nayeli, please share more with us.
– Thanks, Alex. Hello, everyone. Growing up in a small town in the Oklahoma Panhandle, I knew I wanted to attend a college where I could meet new people. Southwestern Oklahoma State University was that place. My parents came to the United States from Mexico to provide my siblings and I a better future. I strive to get a degree not just for me but for my family. I recently graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician from SWOSU. And it was the best decision I made. The hands-on lab experience prepared me for my clinicals. And throughout the MLT program, I made lifelong friendships with my classmates. The program and professors prepared me for my bachelor’s degree by helping me excel in my Health Science classes and providing the tools I needed to succeed. The SWOSU community makes students feel like family, not just a student ID number. They want to see students succeed in their careers. That’s why I joined the Learning Lounge, to help incoming students navigate their new chapter in life. Students can come to the Learning Lounge for help with homework, print assignments, or to study. SWOSU has many ways for students to get involved on campus. I joined the Hispanic American Leadership Organization my freshman year and I loved it. I later became president and was so happy to share my Hispanic heritage not just to our members but to other students on campus. SWOSU has allowed me to pursue my dreams of working in the medical field. Without my professors, friends, and family, none of this would have been possible. As I finish my bachelor’s degree and get ready for graduation, I know I will be prepared for anything. Back to you, Alex.
– Nayeli, thank you for sharing your inspiring journey. Your commitment to helping fellow students through the Learning Lounge and your leadership in HALO truly showcases the inclusive environment here. It’s evident that SWOSU has provided you with the tools and support you need to succeed. Thanks again.
It’s time to hear from Landon, a graduate student from Choctaw, Oklahoma, pursuing his Doctor of Pharmacy at SWOSU. Landon’s interest in pharmacy began in high school, and it brought him to SWOSU’s College of Pharmacy. So, Landon, what’s been keeping you busy lately? Take it away.
– Thanks, Alex. Hey, everyone. Ever since my freshman year in high school, I wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy. And I knew that SWOSU’s College of Pharmacy was the place for me. At SWOSU, I have made connections both professionally and personally that will last a lifetime through the many pharmacy organizations I was involved with: pharmacy organizations like the American Pharmacists Association, or APhA; and Phi Delta Chi, or PDC, the professional pharmacy fraternity, along with research, have been highlights of my time at SWOSU. Through APHA, I presented research posters at national conferences and met other students with similar interests from all over the country. In PDC, I made lifelong friendships on campus with students passionate about community service. All of our organizations on campus have faculty involvement allowing us to get to know our faculty personally. This is crucial to the education you will get here as a student. They really get involved and show that they care for you as an individual. This dedication to students even extends to the design of the new Jerry and Margaret Hodge Pharmacy and Rural Health Center on SWOSU’s campus. Our campus hosts many events from raising money for St. Jude Hospital to social events for students. Along with those, the university offers multiple opportunities to travel and explore the world. I personally went to Greece and traveled throughout Europe. And the College of Pharmacy helps to organize a yearly trip to Panama to provide medical services to remote underserved areas, primarily paid for from student fundraising efforts. The opportunities I’ve had at SWOSU have been amazing. From community pharmacies and hospitals to research, the possibilities are endless. I cannot wait to get started on my career. And that’s all I’ve got. Back to you, Alex.
– Landon, your involvement in pharmacy organizations like the American Pharmacists Association and Phi Delta Chi truly shows the amazing networking opportunities here. Your experience gives us a look into campus life, supportive faculty-student relationships, and the many available opportunities. It’s clear you’ve been making the most out of your time at SWOSU. Keep it up, Landon.
Let’s head over and meet Audrey, a sophomore majoring in Early Childhood Education. Her journey began with a little uncertainty until she found SWOSU’s supportive community for Education majors. With professors who bring real-world experience, Audrey’s confident in her choice. Tell us more about discovering your passion for teaching, Audrey. Take it away.
– Thanks so much, Alex. Hey, everyone. I had no clue what I wanted to major in or what college I wanted to go to until two months before I graduated high school. Southwestern Oklahoma State University was close enough to home for me that I knew I could become my own person while still staying connected with my family. SWOSU was founded in 1901 as a teacher’s college. So the university has a long history of caring about its education majors. My education professors have taught in elementary and middle schools, making me feel confident in my education knowing that I’m learning from real-world experience. Students can pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in various areas of education, like early childhood education, elementary, secondary, special education, and more. The Education Department hosts a career fair every year to help students meet schools and do mock interviews, preparing us for getting jobs after college. When I moved to SWOSU, I was still nervous about my decision. But the community, organizations, and professors quickly made me feel like I was where I belonged. While SWOSU has an awesome community all on its own, by joining organizations like Greek Life and Student Government, it became even more amazing. College is what you make of it. And the friendships I built through these organizations have made my experience unforgettable. While leaving college will be nerve wracking, I know that SWOSU has set me up for success. SWOSU has pushed me to achieve my goals to become the future educator and leader that I aspire to be. That’s my story. As always, go Dawgs. Back to you, Alex.
– Audrey, your decision to choose SWOSU clearly paid off. It sounds like SWOSU’s focus on hands-on learning has prepared you for a career after graduating. Your involvement in Greek Life and Student Government is providing you with valuable skills that will definitely benefit your future in early childhood education. Thanks again, Audrey.
