Let’s meet Aniseh. She’s a freshman exercise science major within EMU’s dynamic College of Health & Human Services. With a passion for cutting edge medical fields, Aniseh will share how EMU’s array of majors, from public health to nursing offers endless possibilities within the healthcare field. Aniseh, the floor is yours.
– Thank you for the introduction, Alex. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to help people out. I wanted a field that combined art and medicine. I found my calling with prosthetics and orthotics at Eastern Michigan University where I can learn from the experts. My advisors pointed me towards the College of Health & Human Services and created a personalized path for me. I was nervous at first because I was never great at lecture classes, but my classes weren’t just lecture-based, they were also hands-on. It was so interesting to see the application of what we learned implemented into our labs. Right now, I’m working on crafting a prosthetic using a mold of a previous patient’s residual limb. It’s a hands-on process where I handle everything from casting and molding to fitting the prosthetic. Another project I’m working on is making antibiotics with dirt. We’re able to cultivate bacteria and antibiotics from the soil and analyze which antibiotics are present. I’m learning so much and it’s only my first year. The College of Health & Human Services introduced me to a world of networking and outreach. EMU’s occupational therapy program includes working out in the community, which helps students understand how to care for real patients. We also work with the campus health clinic and other clinics in the Ypsilanti area. I’ve had the opportunity to shadow patients and the devices that were created for them. From post knee surgeries to the intricacies of prosthetic alignments for the legs, I’ve gained exposure to a wide spectrum of cases. Ever since I hatched, I knew I wanted to be an Eagle. It’s not just about learning and absorbing knowledge, but it’s about connecting with those around you and gaining those experiences that makes Eastern Eastern. That’s all from me. Back to you, Alex.
– Wow, Aniseh, what a fantastic story. Your journey showcases EMU’s commitment to personalized education and hands-on learning. From creating prosthetics to community outreach, she’s embracing every opportunity at EMU. Fly high, Aniseh and continue soaring as you pursue your dreams. That was awesome.
All the way from Jordan, let’s meet Hamzah. With a drive for ambition, Hamzah is just one of many students from EMU’s College of Business that shows that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. His work ethic within nationally and globally ranked programs at EMU’s College of Business has allowed him to build a future career on Wall Street. You are on, Hamzah.
– Thanks, Alex. Being born and raised in Jordan with a desire to come and study in the States, I knew I wanted the college education that would push me to achieve my full potential and discover new facets about myself. Luckily enough, Eastern Michigan University provided just that. The university goes above and beyond to combine programming and connections. The college of business at EMU is the perfect pit stop for some of the world’s most ambitious. Whether it be industry-seasoned professors, hands-on centric clubs and orgs, or opportunities to attend conferences across the nation, they have it all. My studies have gotten me an internship working in corporate and investment banking on Wall Street in New York this summer where I’ll be working as a deal maker for large cap companies in terms of their financing and acquisitions. EMU has prepared me for this internship and a career on Wall Street through professional development clubs that focus on careers. Some of those may include the Eagle Investment Fund and the Financial Management Association. Plus, the support I received from the career development center was a great help. I personally wanted to push my professional development and test the walls of the corporate world. My career coach at the Career Development Center has been instrumental in this endeavor. The advisors are wells of information with years of experience and deep market knowledge. I am confident that as I transition from college into my career, I’ll have a competitive edge. The university, its people and the city have a magnetic atmosphere. Our character here at Eastern Michigan is our biggest point of pride and is why we thrive no matter where we come from. Take it away, Alex.
– Thank you, Hamzah. Wow, what amazing accomplishments. Hamzah shows that EMU really helps their students achieve their goals and desires. With just a little bit of extra effort, you too can achieve it all. We are all wishing you the very best on Wall Street, Hamzah. Thanks again.
Let’s meet Arnecia. She’s a first generation college student with a passion for teaching. Thanks to EMU’s College of Education’s distinguished curriculum and opportunities for hands-on experience. Arnecia tells us how she is better prepared for making a difference in young children’s lives. Tell us more, Arnecia.
– Thanks for the introduction, Alex. Ever since I was a child, I had a deep interest in children and education. Over the years, of course, I always changed my mind about what I wanted to be when I grew up, but deep in my heart, I knew being a teacher was my true passion. As the oldest teacher education institution in Michigan, Eastern Michigan University has played a crucial role in shaping educators who impact future generations through their classrooms. The rigorous curriculum and high expectations set by the university has prepared me well for a profession in teaching. The opportunity to have positive relationships with my professors, take insightful classes and have hands-on experiences in the education field has been so helpful in my preparation for making a difference in young children’s lives and learning. I’ve already spent 132 hours applying the knowledge from my classes to my pre-student teaching experiences such as the Children Institute on campus and various elementary schools in the community. As a first generation student, TRIO student support services and McNair scholars have significantly impacted my college experience by going above and beyond to ensure I have access to the necessary support in my academic career. I’m able to engage in mentoring, tutoring, events, conferences, and seminars. I’ve had opportunities to travel to places like Seattle, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia for cultural engagement in academic conferences. At EMU, I’ve even had the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research. I’m excited to be a part of the EMU community and to contribute to the legacy of excellence in education. Knowing that I have a community of people cheering me on, motivates me to continue chasing my dream. Throwing it back to you, Alex.
– How inspiring, Arnecia. It’s great to hear how EMU has supported you, not only as a first generation college student, but also in achieving your dreams to contribute to the world of education. Keep on going above and beyond, Arnecia, and we are sure you’ll achieve all that you want to achieve. Thanks again.
Let’s give it up for Lamarr, a current MBA graduate student and recent EMU alum hailing from New Baltimore, Michigan, who’s deeply immersed in campus life. Whether he’s belting out tunes in the marching band, guiding students as an RA, or spiking balls on the intramural volleyball team, Lamarr embodies the spirit of involvement. Get ready to learn how to dive into campus life here. Lamarr, take it away.
– Thanks, Alex. What’s going on, y’all? Let me take you on a journey through my college experience where I’ve discovered more than just textbooks and lectures. Eastern Michigan University’s opportunities go well beyond the classroom life. From my first day at EMU, I knew I wanted to immerse myself in every aspect of college life. Whether it’s giving back to the community, joining clubs related to my interests, or attending campus sporting events. There’s never a dull moment here. But what truly sets EMU apart is the opportunities to get involved outside of class. For me, one of these opportunities has been playing the trumpet in the EMU marching band where I not only get to hone in my musical skills, but also form lifelong friendships with fellow musicians. Our marching band doesn’t just perform, we build connections and create memories. In addition to creating memories in the marching band, I’ve also been building connections as a resident advisor. The residential community at EMU has been incredibly supportive. Whether it’s late night study sessions or weekend hangouts, my dorm has become a second home. Being an RA, I’m able to help other students grow and create new experiences for themselves just like I was able to. During my time at EMU, I’ve realized it’s not just about earning a degree, it’s about personal growth and discovering my passions. Through campus involvement, I’ve learned the value of teamwork, leadership, and community. EMU has prepared me for a career and for a fulfilling life after graduation. That’s just a little bit about my time here at Eastern Michigan University. Alex, throwing it back to you.
– Lamarr, you’ve truly maximized your EMU experience, crafting unforgettable memories and forging lifelong bonds. Your dedication to involvement is inspiring, showcasing the vibrant community here. EMU offers a plethora of opportunities for students to thrive and find their perfect niche. Keep shining, Lamarr.
From Chesterfield, Michigan, let’s meet Christina. With a passion for numbers, language, and culture, Christina shows us how being multifaceted is supported within EMU’s College of Arts & Sciences. Not only that, but her experiences studying abroad in Spain allowed her to expand her knowledge and sense of community beyond campus. Tell us more, Christina.
– Hey, Alex. Thanks for having me. My journey to the College of Arts & Sciences began with a quest for knowledge and a passion for exploration. When I was younger, I had no clue where my academic journey was gonna take me, but I found my home in the College of Arts & Sciences where endless opportunities awaited. The College of Arts & Sciences provides an environment where my love for numbers works alongside my passion for language and culture. I’ve taken many classes within data science that helped me land an internship each summer during college. My learning also took an international turn last semester when I studied abroad in Seville, Spain. For four months, I lived my life entirely in Spanish. Conversations with my host family, waiters, professors, and my new Spanish friends. I explored all over Spain, from the beaches and cities to ancient Roman ruins, and even royal palaces. This experience not only enhanced my language skills, but also broadened my global perspective. But college is more than just learning. It’s also creating and connecting community. I love being a part of the different communities within Eastern that allow me to gain even more practical experience. Within the Latinx Student Association, I helped plan the annual quinceanera. In the Women in Computer Science Club, I help young girls dive into the world of technology. I’ve even started my own data science community within EMU to build connections between students in our major. This is the place where anyone can achieve their dreams or create new ones. Eastern has given me the opportunities to broaden my global perspective. They also give me the resources to dive headfirst into my career in technology. At Eastern, endless opportunities await. Back to you, Alex.
– Thank you, Christina. Your experiences through the College of Arts & Sciences at EMU shows that you have a world full of possibilities. It goes to show that even if you don’t know what you want in life, you can find your potential passion right here. Keep dreaming, Christina, and keep following your quest for knowledge and connection.
Let’s give a warm welcome to Wynton. Coming from Detroit, Michigan, he’s a junior majoring in cybersecurity. Today, he’ll walk us through EMU’s cutting edge tech spaces where hands-on learning meets the demands of tomorrow’s job market, all within the top ranked GameAbove College of Engineering & Technology. Take it away, Wynton.
– Thanks, Alex. What is up, guys? Six years of taking computer classes throughout elementary and middle school wasn’t enough to get me interested in cybersecurity, and the fact that it’s a growing field was a major selling point for me. Sill Hall, home of the GameAbove College of Engineering & Technology was proof that Eastern Michigan University was interested in the field and helping students like me get a great education. Sill might just be the best building on campus, with its state-of-the-art dual monitor computer classrooms, study lounges and research labs for engineering. I’ve learned about web development, digital forensics, crypto analysis, and my personal favorite, ethical hacking. I mean, how cool is it to get homework that as you hacking into systems as the good guys, of course. Professors do a great job of giving realistic assignments while being understanding of people who are learning these things for the first time. I’ve gotten a well-rounded cybersecurity education here at EMU. EMU has the resources of a big university with a small campus feel. The small class sizes make it easier to learn and get to know your professors, while living on campus has helped me make friends on the EMU cheer team that’ll last a lifetime. I feel prepared for whatever my next steps are after college. I worked my first internship last summer with a loan agency on their IT and security team. I felt so assured when I saw I’d be doing things I learned in my classes. I always wanted to be a hero when I was a kid. Now, I might not have superpowers, but I do have the ability to protect innocent people’s information from theft. How cool does that sound, Alex? Back to you.
– With EMU’s impressive lab spaces, students are equipped to tackle real world challenges head on. Keep up the great work, Wynton, and keep those digital fortresses strong.
It’s time to meet Elliott, a freshman who faced the common challenge of finding an academic major and a college to call his home away from home. CUW is committed to providing all students a supportive and enriching environment, especially during their critical first year. Elliott, tell us how discovering CUW set the stage for an uncommon college experience. Please take it away.
– Thanks for the intro, Alex. Choosing where to go to college was a big decision. As an athlete, I searched for a place where I could be successful both on and off the field. When I got to Concordia University, I quickly realized that there’s much more to this place beyond soccer. Here I can embrace all my interests like rock climbing and music, and when it comes to academics, I have an awesome advisor who helps me find the courses I need. Despite being five hours from home, I instantly made friends on the soccer team and the residence halls. Living on campus isn’t just about lake views and moderate amenities. There’s always activities and events where you can get together with friends like the Milk Mile Challenge and nightly devotions. CUW is all about community and attending these events makes me feel at home. Everything is easily accessible and I built connections with all kinds of different people. The culture of togetherness makes CUW ideal for anyone who’s looking for a supportive communal environment. There are lots of ways for students to get involved on campus. We have a ton of clubs and organizations, like our Student Government Association and the Campus Activities Board, or there are opportunities to work various on-campus jobs, so you can make money right here at school, but what truly sets CUW apart is the integration of faith into academics. The faculty here are not just teachers, but mentors who merge faith into everyday applications, showing me how my passions can evolve into a fulfilling career. I already feel equipped and excited for whatever comes next. With CUW support, I’ve started mapping out internship possibilities, taking the first steps towards my future career. That’s all for me. Back to you, Alex.
– Thank you, Elliott, for showing us how CUW supported your transition into college life and gave you a sense of belonging from the beginning. All first year students are matched up with a student mentor to ensure they are engaged on campus, aware of academic support resources, and have a solid foundation for their success. Thanks again, Elliott.
Let’s meet Maya, a business major who balances a perfect 4.0 GPA while being a star athlete on the track team. Maya’s experience offers an inspiring story of determination, resilience, and success. Maya, tell us about the challenges you overcame and how CUW has helped you reach your full potential. Take it away.
– I appreciate the intro, Alex. My journey into college wasn’t easy. At 15, I lost my father, which motivated me to succeed as a tribute to his belief in my potential. I chose Concordia University and I’m so grateful I found a college where people echo the values my father instilled in me. When I arrived at CU Dub, something special was in the air, an energy that showed opportunities and transformation. The support here has been instrumental to me earning a 4.0 college GPA and setting numerous track and field records. My teammates and my coaches have become my second family. Being a part of this community has elevated my performance on the track and plays a role in my overall success. Achieving five individual school records and earning national rankings in three events comes from personal dedication and the collective effort of my team. This is more than just a testament to my athletic ability. It’s a significant part of my journey to self-discovery. I’m not just running for myself, I’m running for my team who motivates me, my coaches who inspire me, and my father who believed in me. Choosing CUW was about the Christian environment that would help me become the person I was meant to be. I’m surrounded by a community of friends, teammates, and staff that have helped me grow in my faith and in my personal development. Their support gives me the confidence to take on all of life’s challenges. I can’t help but reflect on the incredible transformations that Concordia has made on my life. Concordia is more than just a college, it’s a place where my mind is enriched with knowledge, wellness, and faith. Concordia is my home and has helped me overcome obstacles and renewed my purpose, even through challenging times. And that’s my story. Take it away, Alex.
– Thank you, Maya, for the powerful reminder of the strength from adversity, the value of a supportive community, and the role of faith in achieving one’s potential. Your story has shown us that CUW is where students are educated and equipped with the tools to succeed. Thanks again.
Let’s meet Abbie, an innovative mind who didn’t just choose a major, she created an individual academic program. CUW’s flexible and supportive environment enable students to tailor their education to their unique career aspirations. Abbie, please tell us how you’re paving your path within the STEM field.
– Thanks, Alex. Hi, everyone. Pursuing a career in data science has always been my dream, but not a lot of schools offer this program. Then I found Concordia University, Wisconsin, which exceeded my expectations. With its top-notch STEM education programs and supportive community, I found the perfect place to pursue my passions and achieve my dreams. Right away, I was able to start taking coding classes as a data science and applied analytics major. I have access to faculty with relevant professional experience starting their own businesses, partnering with industry, and creating apps, so they really know what they’re talking about. My teachers also really care about me and my interests. While taking courses outside my major, I discovered a new passion for professional communication. With help from several faculty members, I created an individualized major combining data science and communication. My professors encouraged me to try everything, so I took a variety of courses and joined the Campus Activities Board, Actuarial Science Club, Computer Science Club, and the Association of Women in Mathematics. I also balanced two jobs and an internship on campus, and it’s only my first year of college. My individualized major is a significant career advantage. I was able to handpick my classes and customize a curriculum I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. This unique education prepared me for an internship at the Region One Planning Council, where I’ll use data analytics to improve education, the environment, and more. Through personal attention from faculty, designing my own major, and making an impact on the community, I discovered the true meaning of live uncommon. That’s it for me. Back to you, Alex.
– Abbie, you’re not just preparing for the future, but actively shaping it With the skills and knowledge gained right here at CUW, students can choose from over 70 academic programs or forge their path, as Abbie did. There are endless possibilities for students to make a tangible difference in the community. Thanks again, Abbie.
Let’s check in with Ben, an education major who embraced every opportunity to have a well-rounded college experience at CUW. From being a student athlete to experiential learning while studying abroad to creating and organizing a new club right here on campus, Ben welcomed opportunities to develop leadership skills and friendships that will last a lifetime. Ben, tell us how this college experience helped you achieve your personal goals. Please take it away.
– Thanks, Alex. Growing up, I loved playing sports, so when it came to making my college decision, I knew I had to go someplace where I could stay active and get involved. After graduating high school and leaving the Chicagoland area, I found Concordia University, where I was given all of the opportunities of a large college with a close knit atmosphere of a small private university. When I started at Concordia, the very first thing I did was join the men’s volleyball team. Becoming a captain on that team and living on campus has allowed me to make lifelong friends. With over 1500 residents living on campus, there is always something to do with someone at Concordia. As a resident assistant, I’ve had the chance to make awesome connections and build a great community in my hall through tons of fun events. I feel like we’ve done it all, from video game nights to canned food drives, to even glow in the dark Bingo. One of the most rewarding communities I’m a part of here is one I actually helped create, the Falcon Bowling Club. We host events once a month where over 150 Concordia students come out and bowl. This experience has helped me develop leadership skills, and I consider this club my pride and joy. I love the Bowling Club so much that I even brought my Falcon Bowling flag with me when I studied abroad across Europe last summer. Studying Renaissance history while immersing myself in Italian culture has been one of my life’s most memorable experiences, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of the advisors at Concordia Center for International Education. Being a student at CUW means you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get involved, make tons of friends, and maybe even see the world. I’ve made connections here that will last a lifetime and there’s no place I’d rather be. With that, I’ll roll it back to you, Alex.
– Ben, your story highlights what makes CUW’s campus life so exciting. Students can explore their interests, take on new challenges, and build a community far beyond the campus borders through the arts, music ensembles, theater ministry groups, community service projects, or global missions, CUW empower students to the fullest. Thanks again, Ben.
