Service and Success with Josh

Segment #2 from Upper Iowa University

Transcript

Managing service, career and education takes dedication, and Josh knows that commitment firsthand. A junior majoring in financial management, Josh is both a proud Army National Guard veteran and a full-time employee pursuing his degree online in Upper Iowa University. His journey shows how flexible programs empower students to advance their careers while honoring their service. Take it away, Josh.

– Thanks, Alex. What’s up, everyone? Crazy enough, my mom graduated from UIU. But when I was younger, school really wasn’t my thing. So I’ve taken a very long windy road to get to where I am today, about to graduate with a degree in finance, and it wouldn’t have been possible without upper Iowa University. When I was 16, 9/11 happened, and I tried lying about my age to join the Marines. I elected to leave high school early so I could join the National Guard at 17. Once out of the guard, I pursued a career in truck driving. But after a while, I decided to give college a go so I could eventually be home more. Initially, I enrolled as a traditional student coming to a remote center for classes. But between being on the road and getting coursework done, I was spinning my wheels and running myself ragged, not making any progress at all. Finally, this last year, I decided to make the jump to online classes. The transition was really bumpy, but the staff and advisors at UIU were with me every step of the way. Professors are willing to work with you when life gets in the way, and my goal of getting a degree is now realistically achievable. Additionally, UIU is extremely supportive of military veterans. There are various benefit packages available that give veterans a break in their tuition. There are even a few UIU satellite campuses located on military bases across the country. Though I’m not on campus much anymore, there’s a military veteran support team that provides assistance in many ways, including tutoring, counseling, veteran benefits and more. I never thought in a million years I would be graduating with honors, but thanks to Upper Iowa University, I know that’s going to happen. That’s my story. Back to you, Alex.

– Thank you for sharing your story, Josh. Your past shows how UIU supports veterans and working professionals alike, offering flexible programs that fit real life. From serving our country to pursuing a degree in financial management, your dedication embodies the spirit of perseverance and growth. And we are wishing you the best of luck as you continue your journey. Thanks again, Josh.
