Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia.[18] Founded in 1836 as "Emory College" by the Methodist Episcopal Church and named in honor of Methodist bishop John Emory,[19] Emory is the second-oldest private institution of higher education in Georgia[20] (after Mercer University, founded in 1833).[21]
